Chips

During the war, as the people were not able to help for the war effort, sending their animal for war assist was a suitable option for them.

So, a German Shepherd-Collie-Siberian Husky named Chips reported for Army duty.

Due to his braveness and courageous presence at the war he has also achieved many awards and prizes, Silver Star, Purple Heart, and many more.

Chips also was honored with Dickin Medal which is considered the highest honor for animals that exhibit wartime bravery.

Chips, The War Dog was a movie released by Disney which created a heroic story of this German Shephard.

Lucca

Yet, another brave German Shepherd!

Lucca worked missions with the U.S. Marine Corps for six years under Staff Sgt. Chris Willingham. Her job was to detect explosives during her 2 tours to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Lucca led more than 400 missions where she revealed explosives, insurgents, and ammunition.

During her last mission on 23 March 23, 2012, an IED blew up beneath her, while she survived, underwent surgery and lost her front leg.

Later on, she retired and went on to live with Staff Sgt. Chris Willingham and his family.

In 2016, Lucca was honored for her hard effort by The People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) and received the Dickin Medal, the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross.

Her life has been transformed into a book, Top Dog: The Story of Marine Hero Lucca by Maria Goodavage.

Lucca Passed away in January 2018.

Sergeant Stubby

Sergeant Stubby

A little brindle bull terrier mutt named Stubby served as the mascot of the 102nd Infantry Regiment.

His task – A critical member of the 26th (Yankee) Division in WWI.

Full 18 months, Stubby served in 17 battles as the unofficial mascot of the 102nd Infantry Regiment.

Stubby’s efforts weren’t always safe, however. Later, he got hit by shrapnel in his leg and chest during a grenade attack.

However, he survived and came out like a lion!

Stubby even has a life-sized bronze statue displayed in his honor titled “Stubby Salutes” in the Connecticut Trees of Honor Memorial at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Middletown, Connecticut.

“Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero” an animated film on Sergeant Stubby was released in 2018 and also in the same week Avengers: Infinity War was released.

Stubby passed away in 1926.

Smoky

smoky therapy dog

4 pound Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie discovered in the New Guinea jungle during WWII made her way to Corporal William “Bill” A. Wynne, an air-crewman in photo-reconnaissance.

Smoky was known as War dog, First therapy dog.

Despite not being an official military dog, Wynne found a way to sneak Smoky around.

Smoky and Wayne’s relationship was really strong and how strong it was I can’t explain in words it’s that strong.

She saved Wynne’s life by barking and alerting him to an incoming kamikaze attack. Because of this, he nicknamed her the “angel from a foxhole.”

Not only did she entertain the troops on a regular basis, but she also took part in an important communications mission.

For her efforts, Smoky was awarded eight battle stars.

Smoky passed away in February 1957.

On Veterans Day in 2005, a bronze life-sized sculpture of Smoky sitting in a GI helmet was unveiled. Created by Susan Bahary.

Sallie Ann Jarrett

Sallie was the mascot of the 11th Pennsylvania Infantry during the American Civil War.

According to the book Tails from the Afterlife, the brindle pit bull terrier was gifted to Capt. William R. Terry of Company I in May of 1861. On a regular basis, the pup joined soldiers for drills and dress parades.

She marched twice with President Abraham Lincoln.

During fighting at Gettysburg, Sallie separated from the regiment during the Union retreat to Cemetery Hill. Soldiers feared her demise. Rather, soldiers saw her guarding wounded and dead soldiers for days.

Sallie past away in February 1865 at Hatcher’s Run.

Year-round visitors to the 11th Pennsylvania Infantry Monument in Gettysburg Pennsylvania frequently leave dog biscuits at the life-sized statue of Sallie. She sits at the base of a pedestal memorial, clearly guarding the soldier on the lookout up top.

So, we are done with these heroes, now leave me a comment that which was your favorite military dog to serve the soldiers.
